What's the difference between a Mormon Temple and a Chapel?

The Calgary Alberta Temple was dedicated last month as the 140th operating temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. That's pretty big news. We're pretty excited about it. Since we couldn't go to the Temple Open House, we were also pretty excited when this came in the mail.

That's one of the open house tickets that was very thoughtfully sent to us by Jason's grandparents. We are pretty fortunate to have them living right around the corner from the new temple as they very routinely kept us updated on the progress of the temple and gave us a very lovely report of what the tour was like (they very thoughtfully included a Thank You Card which is funny as it is we who should be thanking them). We were also able to find some interior photos of the Calgary Temple here. The wheat motif and paintings of the landscape from the Calgary area are beautiful.

Of course, there was the traditional cornerstone ceremony which can be watched (in a shortened form) in the video below. The kids thought it was pretty funny that President Monson can wiggle his ears. And we made sure to pause the video when the camera panned the choir so that we could play a game of "Where's Uncle Chase". We found him :).

The temple being dedicated has also really opened up more conversation in our home about temples, why we have them and what the difference is between a temple and a chapel. Along those same thoughts, I found this inforgraphic that I thought was great at showing the difference between Mormon Temples and Chapels.

(the infographic does not seem to be loading properly, so until I figure out how to fix it, you can check it out here)

Even though we no longer live in Calgary, knowing that there is now a dedicated temple there is a wonderful, peaceful thought. Speaking to our friends and families and hearing all of their experiences surrounding the building and dedicating of the temple has been a wonderful treasure for us. Temples are an incredible blessing in our lives and I am so grateful to see one now standing beautifully upon the hilltop in a city that we hold so dear. Looking forward to visiting it one day soon!
