Our children counted down to the Tulip Festival. And while I love tulips, I had a grand plan of renting bicycles to ride along the canal to give an extra dimension to this year's trip. With the tulip festival being on the small side, the bike ride served as the perfect way to soak up the day. Then we would ride to parliament and do a tour. It was perfect. And had we gone forward with the plan it would have worked out really well with the forecast for rain in the afternoon (we would have been inside for our tour at the same time that the rain storm came). Well, we didn't go forward with it. Whoops.
In the end, we took 3 excited kiddos on a hot car trip to roast in the sun and eat a picnic lunch. Then to cool off outside parliament with races in the pouring rain while I chided myself for not listening to my instinct about the original plan and sticking with it. There is a time to go with the flow and a time for planning. This day needed planning.
All that said, the kids loved the tulip festival. They loved running in the rain. And they loved getting a treat of kettle popcorn to remember their travels. I'm glad they have such positive attitudes :).
And dear future self: plan next year better. Show up early to get tickets to parliament. And consider driving out the night before. Check out some museums ;). Ride some bikes. And for goodness sake - remember your children will love it all as long as you have a positive attitude about it all. It is most importantly about the time together.
