Easter Traditions: Introduction

Since Atticus is still young, we have been easing into what kind of traditions we want to have as a family. We both agree that traditions are important but when it comes to days that carry such incredible importance, such as Easter, it is easy to let some traditions distract from the real meaning of the holiday.

That brings us to the Egg Hunt. Atticus was too young last year, but we knew that it was definitely something he was old enough for this year. The only catch was that neither of us are particularly fond of the Easter Bunny...yes, you read that right - we don't care for the Easter Bunny. So we scoured the internet and spoke with friends and family to get some ideas of doing the hunt without the Easter Bunny ever needing to break and enter.

Unfortunately, most of the wonderful ideas involve children being a little older and able to understand more about the Savior and the meaning of Easter (we plan on introducing some of them next year). So we decided that we would just start introducing the Egg Hunt this year and leave a trail of eggs for Atticus to follow in the morning to a special treat. Just some good, old fashioned fun.

Seeing the expressions on Atticus' face as he realized the egg trail continued around each corner was so much fun. And the fun continued when Mom and Dad actually let him eat chocolate (before breakfast).
Debating whether he should put the egg in the bucket or in his mouth...
"There are MORE!"
"Look what I found!
Chocolate for breakfast - no complaints.

Of course, Easter wasn't all chocolate for us. The week beforehand, we read each day from the scriptures about the final days of Christ's life. Atticus made lillies and lambs to decorate the apartment with and we memorized 'The Living Christ' leading up to Easter.

We are pretty excited about some of the ideas we want to implement next year as we try to focus on the Savior and the incredible sacrifice he made for all of us.

“There would be no Christmas if there had not been Easter. The baby Jesus of Bethlehem would be but another baby without the redeeming Christ of Gethsemane and Calvary, and the triumphant fact of the Resurrection.”
---President Gordon B. Hinckley

PS ~ If you would like a few ideas of how to celebrate the week leading up to Easter, we really like this blog post and this Easter Booklet (the booklet needs to be purchased though). You can also find a chronology of the final week of the Saviors life, including the scriptural references, here.
